The Diamond Sea is a piece about the fleetingness and changefulness of youth, created with young dancers on the eponymous Sonic Youth song.

The Diamond Sea

Etienne Guilloteau

“Time takes its crazy toll
And how does your mirror grow
You better watch yourself when you jump into it
‘cause the mirror’s gonna steal your soul…”
– Sonic Youth

“The Diamond Sea” was described by indie magazine Magnet as a song that “is many things at once: a catchy, evocative pop number, wistful and meditative; a long noise workout; an atmospheric jam; a showcase for each band member in turn; an aural history of the group’s development from skronky art rock to woozy romantics; and a statement of purpose for a band that wanted to be all of that, and also remain independent, and also reach the widest audience possible.” (Eric Wagoner)

This kind of music obviously belongs in a performance made by teenagers. The Diamond Sea is a piece about change, innocence and restlessness in the dim transition from childhood to adulthood, the time in your life when you are precisely “many things at once”. And it is, not least, about the young members of esc ungdomskompani.

Esc ungdomskompani is a project for young dancers (14-19 years of age) with a high technical level and creative skills, situated in Bergen, Norway. Esc ungdomskompani gives them the opportunity to work with professional choreographers and to participate in a professional dance performance. The project is acknowledged as a springboard for the future careers of these young talented dancers.
